Downe House Global Academy

AXA R2 Confronting Clothing (

Description
During this course of lessons, we will consider a variety of wonderful fiction and non-fiction
texts that are centred around the theme of clothing and fashion. Discussions will encompass
a range of forms including newspapers, magazine articles, drama, poetry, and prose, and our
analysis will be aimed towards helping students prepare for the extended reading sections
found in several English examinations. The lessons (and texts) will provide incremental
challenge and each session and section is intended to build on ideas previously discussed.
Through the study of the selected texts, students will not only develop an understanding of
forms, terminology and structural devices but also expand their vocabularies and improve
writing skills. They will also develop the skills required to read between the lines and interpret
meanings. Finally, the texts will be used as springboards for the introduction of topics such as
the environmental impact of fast/disposable fashion - issues that will in turn form the basis for
discussion and the expression of personal opinions.
